Tips for maximizing the enjoyment of fresh
cut flowers
1. Begin with a clean vase - do not
use soft water from sodium (salt) based softener as salt content may
reduce the life of fresh flowers
2. Always add fresh flower food
to the water which helps flowers by:
-
Lowering water pH which helps increase water uptake.
-
Keeping floral capillaries free flowing to ensure maximum hydration.
-
Reducing bacteria which speeds the deterioration of fresh flowers.
-
Providing a food supply for the flowers.
3. Remove all foliage which will be
below the water line. This slows foliage rot and keeps the
solution cleaner longer.
4. Cut flower stems under water with
a sharp knife. This prevents the flower from "gulping"
air instead of water. Air bubbles stop the transfer of water up the
stem, decreasing flower life promoting premature wilting or bending
of the flower head.
Note - to revive wilted flowers. Remove wilted flowers from bouquet.
Re-cut the stems under water with a sharp knife. Lay complete stems
in sink of warm water for 15-30 minutes until bloom becomes firm. Re-cut
under water and rearrange in bouquet. This works for all floral varieties.
5. Flowers will last longer if not placed
in direct sunlight, in a drafty area or on a television set.
Cooler temperatures slows down the aging process allowing maximum lifespan
and enjoyment.
6. A sure sign a flower arrangement is not taking up water (or
has run out of water) is premature wilting and
drying of both flowers and greens. All must be re-cut under
water and returned to a fresh floral solution.
